Now, for Soupstock in Shelton CT. This is a wonderful celebration of music, arts and food. Started 6 years ago by our friends Fred & Michelle Bialek of Liquid Lunch, Soupstock will be a two day affair this year on June 21 and 22. Besides the many bands, Soupstock rocks a soup & chili competition which, you're reading it here first, Chowdafest has entered. That's right, yours truly will be putting whatever culinary skills I possess up against some dynamite chefs who also compete in Chowdafest. Of course, there's the hometown favorite Fred that will no doubt bring it, having won 2 place in multiple categories for many years at Chowdafest (I got the hometown ringer excuse in my back pocket when he wins his own event). Then there's Pat Tennaro from Fairfield's Old Post Tavern. I think OPT is entering a corn chowder which will be delicious of course. Parallel Post is a later entry and I only wish I can cook like Chris but I'm toying with my recipe so I expect to put up a decent fight.
Who else is competing - well, there are some terrific amateurs like the Tortilla Boys with their chicken tortilla soup - they're defending two time champs. That's right, the amateurs have beaten the pros in this contest. Some other local restaurants are in it to but I don't know them personally and I only trash talk with those that know me, haha. On Sunday, there's a whole other competition - chili! I'm not entered but I know a few restaurants who are like Bobby Q's of Westport and Guvnor's Brewing of Norwalk. Matt from Bobby's will bring the heat. No I'm not sure if it's actual spice but he's very creative in the kitchen so early money is on him. Then Caleb from Guvnor's took second at Chowdafest as a rookie in Feb so he could be the dark horse no one is paying attention to.
Now, if you come to Soupstock which has FREE admission, you'll be the first to hear our exciting Chowdafest announcement, assuming you come by the soup tent. It supports a good cause (go to this link to learn more: http://www.soupstockfestival.org/) and you can taste my Southwestern Chowder and maybe earn your vote. Chowda-on! Jim
